Where to Find the Best Grilled Fish and Nightlife in Abuja

InMyCity is a series where we showcase the unique stories and recommendations of people from cities all over the world. From hidden gems to popular spots, we want to discover what makes each city special through the eyes of each person.
In this feature, Pam takes us through what she loves about living in Abuja, from the city’s best shawarma spot to luxurious shopping destinations and lively nightlife.
If I were asked to say my favourite thing about Abuja, I’d probably not know one single thing to say. So instead, here’s a random list of things that make me really love my city.
Where to Eat

Shawarma from Beer Barn: Abuja and shawarma go hand in hand, and Beer Barn, in my opinion, does it the best! Whether it’s the flavour, the texture, or the perfect amount of spice, this place never disappoints.
My order: Chicken shawarma, spicy, no sausage, with just a little cream.
Abacha Barracks Fish and Beer: This is hands down my favourite Sunday activity. It’s an open-grilled fish food court in the middle of an army barrack market. The food is delicious, and the setting is as authentic as it gets.
My order: Grilled catfish and chips with Origin beer.
Village Chief: Village Chief is one of my favourite places for a hearty local meal. The village aesthetic is spot on, and the outdoor seating is breezy and shaded—perfect for enjoying a traditional dish.
My order: Afang soup, pounded yam, and small stout mixed with malt.
Retail Therapy

Shopping at Nettatal: Shopping is one of my favourite activities, and Nettatal makes it an experience. Whether I’m indulging or just window shopping to relax, this place has a vibe like no other. The location on Kumasi Crescent is stunning, and it offers a top-notch shopping experience.
Nightlife
Happy Hour at Pickle Social House: I might be biased just a teeny little bit, but Happy Hour Thursdays at Pickle Social House guarantee a great time. The atmosphere is always lively, and the drinks are consistently on point.
My order: Gin Basil or a Tamarind Rum Sour (it’s not on the Happy Hour menu, but it’s worth asking for!).
Oso Lounge: I’m a club-but-not-club girl, and Oso Lounge strikes the perfect balance. The aesthetics, music, and tequila shots make it my ideal Friday night spot. It’s an Abuja staple and a personal favourite.
My order: Obaje Honey Pot and a bottle of tequila.
