What Nigerians Are Doing for Fun: The Rise of Food, Culture, Fitness and Community Events

There was a time when making plans in Lagos usually meant dinner, a party or a concert. If you wanted to see your friends, you picked a restaurant. If you wanted to meet new people, you went out at night and If you wanted to exercise, you went to the gym. That distinction is becoming less clear.

Spend enough time in Lagos' fitness and wellness scene and you start to notice that people aren't just working out anymore, they're going out to work out.

Run clubs are perhaps the clearest example of how fitness is becoming a social experience in Lagos. The fresh start event for example, has taken the traditional community run and expanded it into experiences that combine a 5KM run with music, socialising and breakfast afterwards.

As someone who genuinely enjoys fitness, I've experienced this shift firsthand and i'm also part of a fitness community called the Sprouted Society, and it is quite interesting to see that workouts can now be the activity you build your weekend around and, quite often, where you meet someone new. This reflects a broader change in how Nigerians, particularly young people in Lagos, are thinking about leisure. We're increasingly looking for things to do, not just places to be.

Food experiences, creative workshops, community gatherings, wellness retreats and fitness events are all giving people new reasons to leave their house and spend time together.

For organisers, that creates an interesting opportunity.

More than anything, I love that the Nigeria experience industry is making room for more kinds of fun. You don't always have to party until 4 a.m. Sometimes, a good meal, a workout or a room full of new people is enough.

Whatever your idea of fun looks like, there's definitely an event for it on Orbit.
